cold snap, or alternatively, oh hell cold snap again

It's not supposed to get this cold in April in Los Angeles! Or so I had hoped...

I haven't posted in a while. That was partly due to the fact that I thought Spring was here and I spent all last weekend furiously planting a bunch of warm season vegetables. I got a bunch of tomatoes, eggplants, squash, peppers, and basil in the ground. And now we get a freak cold storm in April! It's dropping to the low 40s yet again the next couple nights. So I ran around covering the most sensitive seedlings with some old reemay, cut up soda bottles, and whatever else I could find.

It ain't exactly pretty, but I'm hoping it will do the trick. I really don't want to have to replant a bunch of stuff...

  1. The weather is so screwed up!! We're getting summer-like weather over here!! I think today it's supposed to be in the 60's and rainy, but the weekend and all next week, it will be in high 70s and 80s!! Maybe the earth's rotation is out of wack now and we'll start getting Cali like temps year round while you guys get all 4 seasons. How weird would that be? Hope your seedlings survive.

  2. I know! It's so frustrating! So far most of the stuff looked okay. I do think I'm going to have to replant a couple Japanese eggplants that I had just bought and transplanted. They were already suffering from some pest damage, and now I think they're just going to be toast. Oh well. Good thing I started a ton of those Turkish eggplant seeds which I've been keeping in a cold frame. I didn't get to harvest a single eggplant last year because it was such a cold summer. But this year I'm determined!

  3. Good luck with your eggplants. I hope you'll have a massive harvest this year! I just planted my radish and carrot seeds today. We'll see if I kill them or not!

  4. I'm sure you're going to do great with your seeds! Especially because you've got so much worm castings around to use for fertilizer!!

  5. Well, we'll see. I think I've killed my lettuces already so, I hope the radishes and carrots will be a little more hardy. I'm glad lettuces grow so quickly. I think I'm going to have to feed all of the lettuce seedlings I started to the worms now. At least the worms will be happy! :-)

  6. Oh I just saw you lettuce post! I bet they'll come around. It is really hard when the weather just won't cooperate. So far I've only been able to successfully grow and harvest lettuce for one month out of the year. The rest of the time, I can't seem to keep them from either bolting, getting eaten by birds or slugs, or getting super aphid covered. I think there's just this one golden month when the weather is right, and the springtime pests aren't too severe. That's why I'm way more into kale and chard right now. They are easier to grow and if you cut the leaves up really thin like confetti, you can make a fresh salad out of them that's pretty tasty!

  7. I'll definitely have to try growing kale and chard next year. I'll be so happy if the lettuce do survive. Well, you were right about the parsley so I'm sure you're right about the lettuce, too! You're like my gardening guru!! :-)

  8. Ha! I'm no guru. I just spent the last two years making every mistake possible in the garden :)
Well you're still definitely my worm guru! Btw, my bin is looking better. Things are looking much more processed and casting-like!

  9. I'm so glad to hear that your worms are doing better!! Just wait, in no time, you'll have a whole bin full of castings! Well, I think you are an awesome gardener and I hope at some point I get to that point!
